I'm just a beginner, but the instructor at Rockler kept telling me I should buy the larger set turning tools and so I did. Just not from them. The tools are much bigger/longer than I thought they'd be, but that actually seems to work in my favor. They seem up to the challenge of rounding our a blank without jumping around as the smaller carbide tools seemed to do. The set is well-thought out; you get what you need to start turning right away whether it's a handle or a bowl or something else. The first project I'm making is a set of handles. While the supplied handle is a good one, changing from one tool to the next isn't as smooth as I'd like it. Oh, the handle is well-designed and it's just a matter of turning the two set screws a couple of times and one tool comes out and the other pops in. But there you are, in turning nirvana, your tool work giving you shavings that Robert Sorby would envy and then you need to break that moment to switch out one tool in the handle to another. It takes a matter of seconds, but having each of these on their own, I-turned-this-myself handle provides some good practical lessons in turning and gives me a chance to personalize my new tools. These are definitely a nice set of tools that will do you proud and at about the price of two carbide-tipped tools, a bargain. But they are not a cheaply made set, just a thrifty set that will look like a million bucks once I've turned all the handles.
